UNDERSTANDING THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
The lymphatic system consists of vessels and nodes with lymph, a mixture of proteins, water, waste products, and other immune system elements. Located throughout the body, lymph nodes are responsible for filtering all this debris. The largest nodes are located in the armpits, neck, and groin. They all work simultaneously to ensure “clean” lymph is transported back to the veins, carrying blood toward the heart.
SYMPTOMS OF A POOR LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
The typical symptom of lymphoedema features swelling in all or part of a limb and/or another part of the body. At this time, it may be quite tough to fit into clothes, and jewelry and watches can feel tighter than normal. Without treatment, any swelling will usually become more severe and persistent. Signs of lymphoedema in the head and neck may include swelling or heaviness in the face, mouth or throat, and problems with swallowing and speech. Other symptoms in an affected body part can include any of the following.
- AN ACHING, HEAVY FEELING
- DIFFICULTY WITH MOVEMENT
- REPEATED SKIN INFECTIONS
- DEVELOPING HARD, TIGHT, OR THICKENED SKIN
- FOLDS DEVELOPING IN THE SKIN
- WART-LIKE GROWTHS DEVELOPING ON THE SKIN
- FLUID LEAKING THROUGH THE SKIN
WHAT CAUSES LYMPHOEDEMA?
Lymphoedema occurs due to a problem with the lymphatic system, a network of glands and vessels spread throughout the body. The main purposes of the lymphatic system are to help fight infection and drain excess fluid from tissues. There are 2 main types of lymphoedema you should know about.
1. PRIMARY LYMPHOEDEMA – caused by faulty genes that impact the lymphatic system development. This can develop at any age, but typically begins during infancy, adolescence, or early adulthood.
2. SECONDARY LYMPHOEDEMA – caused by damage to the lymphatic system or issues with the movement and drainage of fluid within the system; it can result from an infection, injury, cancer treatment, inflammation of the limb, or a lack of limb movement.
HOW A LYMPH DRAINAGE MASSAGE CAN HELP
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A PEMF LYMPH DRAINAGE SESSION?
Lymph drainage utilizing PEMF is a useful technique in treating lymphedema and other health conditions. If you have symptoms of trapped lymph fluid in the body, the PEMF technician will follow a particular sequence to administer the PEMF to properly stimulate the lymphatic system allowing the lymph fluid to move easily throughout the nodes and tissues for proper lymph drainage. Normatec compression therapy is used at the same time as PEMF Therapy, designed to increase blood circulation in the lower legs, feet, and ankles. The calf muscle is considered the second heart as it plays an important role within the circulatory system of the body. Targeted dynamic air compression massage on the calves along with PEMF Therapy is scientifically proven to significantly reduce inflammation and pain and increase circulation throughout your entire lower body.
